PULSE-BEAT
“ A breath or a pulse-beat of the undefinable spirit of life”
Pulse-Beat (2023) draws from the tradition of Chinese ink painting, where artworks are often described as mind-prints or seals of the heart. These pieces are not merely visual representations but manifestations of the artist’s inner state, registering character through gesture, rhythm, and flow. This centuries-old practice seeks to bypass the dualistic mind, favouring intuitive spontaneity over conscious deliberation—perceiving art as a pure expression of being, unobstructed and immediate.
In this series, the artist embraces this philosophy through the deliberate destruction of each physical artwork upon completion—a radical act marking a first in their practice. This acceptance of impermanence became a catalyst for deeper creative surrender. Liberated from attachment to outcome, the artist discovered new lightness and variety in mark-making. Each work, carefully photographed before destruction, exists as a digital translation of a temporal act—an echo of breath, a pulse of the indefinable.
As the 17th-century Chinese painter Shih-t’ao observed, “When painting follows the heart, the obstructing veils are removed, all the innumerable things of Heaven and Earth can be represented.” This series embodies that ideal, revealing the essence beneath surface, beyond permanence.
In July 2024, Choy’s work Without Hesitation was exhibited on a grand urban scale, appearing on over 300 digital displays across Melbourne (July 1–15) and 1,000 screens throughout Brussels (July 16–23) as part of Platform For Art. Curated by Arthemort (former Head of Digital Art at Sotheby’s) and presented in collaboration with Artcrush Gallery, Oohmedia, and Clear Channel, the project brought fine art directly into the flow of city life, reaching vast new audiences beyond traditional gallery settings. Choy’s participation reflects her commitment to the digital art movement and its role in reshaping how art is encountered in contemporary culture.
