INDIGO DAZE

Indigo Daze (2023) is an AI-generative collection born from lived experience—a poetic response to the ocean that shapes the artist’s daily life in her seaside village. Vast, blue, beautiful, powerful, ever-changing: the sea is nature and the sublime at its most palpable, offering a rhythm that both regulates and invigorates.

Created with the somaesthetic experience of nature in mind, the collection invites audiences to drift—to mindwander—just as one might while gazing out over the endless indigo horizon, salt air in the lungs. In the spirit of traditional Chinese painting, these works are designed not merely to depict but to transport.

Descriptive prose, drawn from the artist’s own encounters with the ocean, was shared with generative AI as a prompt—an act of storytelling and collaboration. Indigo Daze opens a conversation in which the ocean speaks through image, memory, and machine.

To guide DALL·E 2 toward the ocean’s diversity and shifting temperament, the artist drew on references to indigo shibori—a traditional Japanese manual resist-dyeing technique that creates intricate patterns by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compressing cloth before dyeing. The deep tonal gradients and fluid, organic textures of the cloth form metaphors for the sea’s currents and surfaces of the sea.

Each work in Indigo Daze carries the potential for a single Mind-Print — a sister work hand-painted by the artist exclusively for its collector. Only holders of Indigo Daze are able to commission one, receiving both a physical painting and its digital token. This one-to-one pairing affirms the finite capacity of human creation, set against the infinite iterations of AI, and transforms collecting into a living feedback loop of trust, dialogue, and shared presence.

MIND PRINTS

Choy recreated works from Indigo Daze, transforming AI-generated images into physical paintings. Through the hand and heart of the artist their mechanized origins are suffused with qi — the vital force of life and energy. Passed through human gesture, the digital object is animated with the artist’s bio-feedback, becoming a living conduit between technological creation and embodied human experience.
