ONENESS

Oneness (2023) explores the philosophical concept of oneness—a continuous realisation that the self is not separate from, but in dynamic relation with, the world around us. Drawing on Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian thought, the work engages with the idea of the self as porous and receptive, attuned to the rhythms, flows, and resonances of the wider environment.

Through a meditative process of repetition, the artist layers thousands of calligraphic brushstrokes—rooted in traditional Chinese painting—over expansive colour fields. The large scale of the work magnifies the physicality and labour involved, emphasizing disciplined practice as both a contemplative ritual and a mechanism for rewiring the mind and body, resonant with concepts from neuroscience.

This abstraction speaks to the permeability of our nature: at once solid and fluid, individual and collective, constantly evolving in sympathetic resonance with the surroundings.

Oneness contemplates the self not as a fixed entity, but as a convergence of energies—an evolving constellation within a larger, interconnected whole. In doing so, the painting becomes both a record of presence and a reflection of the unseen forces that shape and bind us.
